Your mindset and a strategy could be life changing

Your business demands the right attitude and a clearly defined strategy for being successful. So why would you not need the right mindset and a well-constructed plan to live as a healthy workaholic? By being smart about it and planning for this, could be life changing for you and your loved ones. Not to mention, it could also result in a positive chain of events for your business too.

The right mindset

How we react to a situation can vary significantly for each person. It is the same for the way we think and our outlook too. So, being in the right headspace and having the right attitude can be the difference between success or failure.

To sum up, a positive attitude and being fully committed to succeeding can make the difference in achieving your goal.

Planning is vital

Create a plan as you would create a business plan using S.M.A.R.T (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timebound). Include everything that you feel you need to achieve the ‘healthy workaholic’ status, bearing in mind:

  • What area(s) do you want to tackle? For example:
    • Mental, physical & emotional health
    • Nutrition
    • Relaxation
    • Exercise
    • Sleep
    • Creativity
    • Doing things that fulfil you and make you happy
  • Prioritise your goals
  • What’s going to prevent you from achieving your goal?
    • What plans can you put in place to overcome this?
    • Plan for having a bad day/week/month
    • Plan for when ‘life gets in the way’
  • Do you need outside help (friend, colleague, peer or professional help)?
  • Are you good at holding yourself accountable to achieving your goal, or do you need someone else to do this for you?

What is your why?

Determine what’s really important to you. What is your ‘why’. What would it mean to you if you achieved your goal? A sense of purpose for something that you value will give a meaningful reason to succeed.

Take action in one area

From your plan choose one goal that you want to achieve, the one that deep down will make you feel better. For example exercising, meditating, having a regular lunch break, planning a holiday or teaching your brain to switch off.

Bite-size pieces

Break down the goal into bite size pieces, so that it feels more manageable.

Habits

Think about what habits you need to change or introduce to help you achieve your goal.

Build in time

Look at your schedule and see how you can introduce your new habits into your day, week or month. Furthermore, be realistic with this and don’t overstretch yourself – you want to create a structure that is attainable. Think about time blocking the bite size pieces onto your calendar to ensure you have time to do them.

Accountability

When you’re accountable to someone else, you may find that you’re more likely to commit to developing new positive habits. So look at setting up a WhatsApp group with your friends/colleagues, or join an accountability app.

Reminders

Incorporate the changes into your everyday life and use visual aids to remind you. Use post-it notes, alarms, apps – whatever it takes to prompt you of your new habit and stick to it!

Willpower

Keep reminding yourself why you’re doing this. If you’re waning, revisit your plan and look at your ‘why’. A strong sense of determination will help you uphold your new habits when times get tough.

It’s not a race

You may find that life gets in the way and you’re having trouble keeping to your plan. That’s okay. Give yourself permission to go off course and when you’re in a better place, pick up where you left off. This is not a race

Healthy workaholic life

So what does it mean to live a healthy workaholic life? Well, a healthy workaholic can mean many things to different people:

  • Continue to be busy, however you take regular breaks throughout the day
  • Able to mentally switch off from work
  • Engage in activities outside of work that really make you happy
  • Say no when it doesn’t feel right for you
  • Trust and recognise the value of an expert to work on or in your business
  • Don’t work outside normal working hours
  • Book various holidays or take time off to break up the year
  • Don’t take work home with you
  • Most of the time, you feel healthy and have a positive outlook
  • By outsourcing some of the work to allow you to realign the balance

When will I be a healthy workaholic?

There is not a set time frame as embedding a new habit can take time and is different for everyone. So be patient with yourself, but also determined. Plus, do not be put off if you feel that you have too many areas to re-balance. It is impossible to do them all at the same time and this is where your strategy and mindset comes into play.
